College studies : avoid the illusion of having free time

All new college students will tell you this : when the first semester exam schedules become available, the biggest trap is to feel that you have plenty of free time before you start studying.

In fact, unlike high school where assessments are carried out almost every month forcing students to learn their lessons daily, at university, assessments usually take place at the end of each semester. Throughout the university course students are not necessarily questioned at the beginning of each lesson to see if they have learnt the previous lessons (as is often the case in high school).

Tutors and teachers give their lessons, then, leave the class without interacting necessarily with the students. Students who have just freshly arrived from high school studies suddenly discover a new "kind of freedom" which gives them the impression there is loads of time for studying (or so they think !), and therefore, plenty of time for enjoying the non-academic side of student life. BE CAREFUL !! This way of looking at things is actually an illusion !

Indeed, as time progresses, the courses, consisting of several subjects and taught by different teachers, accumulate. And if you don't take the time to read them regularly as soon as they are taught, you simply end up being left behind at the first exams. This usually generates a panic situation in which the student doesn't know what and where to start revising (which lesson to learn first, which chapter to revise before others, etc.) .

And this is what frequently happens to newcomers into university studies. In such a situation, failure at scheduled exams becomes unavoidable. Students discover the reality and realise that they have been duped by "the illusion of having more time". It is then quite common to see some students deserting exam rooms, because they simply don’t feel prepared.

This means, dear students, that to succeed in university studies, you must be careful : do not be taken in by the "illusion of free time". Revise your lessons and do your research as you go along, just as you did in high school. That is the secret of success !
